A ball valve is a type of quarter-turn valve that uses a hollow, perforated and pivoting ball (called a float ball) to control flow through it. It operates by turning the ball a quarter turn to open or close the valve. The ball has a hole, or port, through the middle so that when the port is in line with both ends of the valve, flow will occur. When the valve is closed, the hole is perpendicular to the ends of the valve, and flow is blocked. Ball valves are durable, easy to operate and can handle high pressure and temperature applications.
Ball valves can be classified into several types based on their construction, connection type, and material:
Full-port vs Reduced-port: Full-port ball valves have the same diameter as the pipe they are connected to, providing maximum flow and reduced pressure drop. Reduced-port ball valves have a smaller diameter ball, which restricts flow, but is used in applications where a specific flow rate is needed.
Single vs Double Body: Single-body ball valves have a one-piece construction while double-body ball valves have two separate pieces that are connected by bolts.
Floating vs Trunnion-mounted: Floating ball valves have a ball that floats inside the valve body, which is designed to reduce friction and wear. Trunnion-mounted ball valves have a ball that is mounted on trunnions, which provide support and stability.
Metal vs Plastic: Ball valves can be made of metal (such as stainless steel, brass or cast iron) or plastic (such as PVC or polypropylene) depending on the application requirements.
Connection Type: Ball valves can have different connection types, including threaded, flanged, or welded ends.
Actuation: Ball valves can be manual (operated by hand), automated (operated by an actuator), or electro-pneumatic (operated by an electric signal).
